THE LEAD: JUDGE BLOCKS TRUMP’S ORDER ON SANCTUARY CITIES

An executive order signed by President Trump in January was blocked by a federal judge yesterday, stopping financial punishment against cities that the president claimed “harbored illegal immigrants.”

Some of the biggest cities in the country have such practices, including Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, according to a report from CNN.

NBC News reports that, “U.S. District Court Judge William Orrick rejected the administration’s argument that the executive order applies only to a relatively small pot of money and said Trump cannot set new conditions on spending approved by Congress.”

The judge had previously made the same arguments in a ruling that put a temporary hold on the executive order targeting so-called sanctuary cities. The Trump administration has appealed that decision to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

A man posing as a ride-share driver picked up a woman in his car and sexually assaulted her on American University’s campus early Sunday, police said.

NBC 4 in Washington has the details on this troubling story, which should serve as a warning to college students everywhere:

“The 21-year-old victim and a male companion told police they saw an Uber sticker on a car. About 3:20 a.m. Sunday, the victim flagged down the driver,” according to the report. “The attacker said he would drive the victim and her companion somewhere, and both got in the car, police said.”

JUSTICE DEPT. SUES TO BLOCK TIME-WARNER, AT&T MERGER

The Justice Department sued the AT&T-Time Warner $85.4 billion merger Monday, setting up a showdown for the first big acquisition to be considered under Trump’s administration.

The New York Times reports, “By challenging the deal, the Justice Department is taking an approach to antitrust issues that is starkly different from the Obama administration’s. In 2011, for instance, the department approved a similar deal – Comcast’s acquisition of NBCUniversal – after imposing numerous conditions on the transaction.”

If the AT&T-Time Warner merger were to go through it would create a mega media and telecommunications organization, giving them an unrivaled ability to reach consumers through news and entertainment programming.
